What is automation?
Automation is the technology by which a procedure or task is carried out with minimal human assistance. In the case of gig work, automation applies to the process of matching individual shifts or gigs to workers, as well as other logistics associated with scheduling.
How does this automation process work?
With CrewDriver an employee or gig worker creates a profile, with a link provided by the employer. When a shift needs to be filled the employer creates a call (which takes less than a minute) and CrewDriver does the rest.
A text message is sent to the gig worker and CrewDriver interprets their reply, registering whether they accepted or declined. A process that used to take hours of concerted effort now requires only minutes of hands-on attention from the employer. Shifts are therefore filled more efficiently.
Why use SMS to communicate with workers?
Texting has become the most prevalent form of communication. We would expect this from millenials and gen Z, as they are likely to have grown up with technology, but a recent Gallup poll shows that “sending and receiving text messages is the most prevalent form of communication for American adults under 50.”
Not only is texting the most common form of communication, it has other major benefits to your business as well:
- Workers are more likely to reply to a text than answer a phone call.
- Texting is has better reach.
Workers are likely to have their phones on them throughout the day and are more likely to answer a text than an email or phone call. - Texting shortens response time.
Being able to text back their response, rather than answering a call makes it easier for workers to accept shifts on the go. - Texting is convenient.
After a text is received, workers can check their schedule, make a decision about accepting a shift and reply with confidence and at their convenience. With a phone call workers are put on the spot to make a decision which is more likely to result in schedule changes in the future. - Texting is your workers’ preferred way to communicate.
The ease of being able to text back to accept shifts makes workers more likely to choose shifts with your business over those who use other methods of contact.
